Seton Hall Beats Indiana St 79-77 To Win First NIT Final Since 1953 On Game Winning Shot by Dre Davis

The Seton Hall Pirates beat the Indiana St. Sycamores 79-77 in the NIT Final at Hinkle Fieldhouse to win their first NIT Championship since 1953 and finished up with a record of 25-12.

It is the fifth time in program history that the Hall has finished with at least wins in its 120-year history.

The Pirates started out well in the first half up 11 points, but then got into foul trouble and were tied at halftime 39-39.

In the second half, they had a late rally after trailing 77-70 with 3:05 run and went on a 9-0 run to close out the game.

They were led by their Al-Amir Dawes, Dre Davis and Kadary Richmond.

Dawes lead the way with 24 points, four steals, and one rebound.

Dawes hit 6-14 field goals, 3-5 three-pointers and 9-9 free throws.

He had five key points down the stretch in the second half including the game-tying three-pointer.

He was spectacular in the entire NIT Tournament averaging 21 points per game and was named NIT Most Outstanding player.

It’s a perfect way for Dawes to cap off his Pirates career and a well-deserved honor for all he did for the program.

Point guard Kadary Richmond had a stellar performance with a “double-double” of 21 points and 13 rebounds with five assists, two blocks and one steal.

Richmond made 8-19 field goals, 1-2 three-pointers and 4-5 free throws.

He attacked the zone and went to the basket which helped him score layups and draw fouls.

He is at his best when he drives the lane and goes downhill.

It remains to see whether Richmond will go pro after this season, transfer to another school or comes back to the Hall for another year.

Forward Dre Davis had 18 points with three rebounds, three blocks and one assist.

He made 6-12 field goals, 2-2 three-pointers and 4-5 free throws.

Davis showed off his versatility by taking the ball into the paint and featuring his mid-range game as well as his outside shot.

He hit the game-winning lay-up with 16 seconds left going past three defenders and showed the tenacity that he has played with all season long.

Hopefully Davis will be able to return next year since he has an option to enter the transfer portal or go pro.

This win is an incredible accomplishment for the entire Seton Hall roster as well as Head Coach Shaheen Holloway and the coaching staff.

It’s a testament to them that they did not give up after being left out of the NCAA Tournament and kept going and stay focused in the NIT Tournament.

It was an amazing run and they have so much to proud of and build on for the future.

Now the Hall looks ahead to the offseason and they will focus on increasing their NIL budget.

They will also have to replace Dawes and center Jaden Bediako who are in the final year of their eligibility.

It remains to be seen whether Richmond and Dawes will return as well as forward Dylan Addae-Wusu.

Hopefully freshman forward Isaish Coleman will also come back and that will be a priority going forward in the next few weeks and months.

It will be a fun offseason to look forward and I can’t wait to cover who will be staying and leaving the Pirates program.

Thank you to everyone for reading my recaps all season long.

Until next year, Go Pirates!

Seton Hall Dominates Georgia 84-67 To Advance to NIT Final

The Seton Hall Pirates beat the Georgia Bulldogs 84-67 tonight at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana to advance to the NIT Final for the first time since 1953.

The Pirates were in command of this game from the beginning leading 42-25 at halftime and never let up in the second half.

They shot 32-68 from the field (47.1%) and 8-20 (40%) three-pointers.

Guard Al-Amir Dawes lead the way with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Dawes made 6-11 field goals, 4-7 three-pointers and 4-4 free throws.

He has shot well throughout the NIT Tournament averaging 20 points per game in the last four games along with stellar defense especially tonight against Noah Thomasson.

Forward Dre Davis had a stellar game in his hometown with 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Davis made 9-18 field goals and 1-2 three-pointers.

It’s clear that Davis is comfortable playing in his hometown gym after he scored 14 points there earlier in the season against Butler.

Guard Jaquan Sanders provided a much needed spark off the bench with 11 points, two assists and one rebound.

Sanders made 4-6 field goals and 3-5 three-pointers.

He hit two key three-pointers in the first half which helped set the tone for the rest of the game.

It hasn’t always been easy for Sanders to get playing time this year but tonight he made the most of his opportunity and will need to have another game like this in the final.

With this win, the Pirates now look ahead to a difficult match-up ahead against the Indiana State Sycamores in the NIT Final on Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m in what will be a home-game type atmosphere for them playing in Indiana. The Sycamores have the 16th-ranked offense in the nation with excellent three-point shooting as well as big man 6-10 center Robbie Avila.

It will not be easy, but if there’s anything that this Pirates team has shown throughout this year is that they overcame any adversity that is thrown their way and they will not be intimidated by any opponent.

Seton Hall Dominates UNLV 91-68 To Advance to NIT Semifinals

The Seton Hall Pirates routed the UNLV Runnin Rebels 91-68 tonight in front of an electric crowd at Walsh Gym to advance to the NIT Semifinals.

The Pirates were in complete command from the get-go on both ends of the floor.

Their defense was in full form holding the Runnin Rebels to 44.4 % field goal percentage (28-63) and 5-21 three-pointers (23.8%).

The Hall also had six blocks to two for UNLV and an advantage of 9-5 in steals.

Their defense helped lead to fast break points and baskets in transition the other way.

It all starts with their defense and it sets the tone for the rest of the game.

Their offense was a lot more efficient tonight hitting 35-62 field goals (56.5%) and 11-22 three-pointers.

They looked comfortable shooting in their own campus gym.

Guard Al-Amir Dawes led the way with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Dawes hit 8-16 field goals, 4-7 three-pointers and 1-2 free throws.

He started out well in the first half and then came out firing in the second half with three-straight three-pointers and his second three-pointer was an incredible shot well beyond the three-point line which blew the roof off the gym.

Dawes has come a long way this year after a slow start and when he hits shots like he did he tonight, it energizes the team and the crowd. He is fun to watch when he gets rolling and has a lot of confidence in his shot and deep range to shoot from anywhere on the court.

Point guard Kadary Richmond had a fine all-around game with a “double-double” of 16 points and 10 assists with five steals and one block.

Richmond made 7-9 field goals and 2-2 three-pointers.

He was efficient from the floor and looked a lot better on his outside shot.

He hasn’t always shown consistency throughout this season, but he is at his best when he is attacking the basket and setting up his teammates.

Richmond sets the tone for the rest of the offense and as he goes, the other four starters follow him.

Center Jaden Bediako had a fine game of his own with 11 points, four rebounds, and four blocks.

Bediako was perfect from the field hitting 5-5 field goals and 1-1 free throws.

His defense was stellar as well and he controlled the paint.

It was fun to watch him on both ends of the floor and he has a consistent performer all season long.

With this win, the Pirates now look ahead to the NIT Semifinals on Tuesday, April 2 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis against the Georgia Bulldogs at 9:30 p.m.

The Seton Hall Pirates beat the North Texas Mean Green 72-58 this afternoon at Walsh Gym in the second round of the NIT to advance to the NIT Quarterfinals for the first time since 1953 when they won the NIT.

The Pirates started out slow in the first half, but then turned it on at the half leading 33-24 at halftime.

In the second half, they dominated and never let up their intensity.

The Hall won this game with their defense holding the Green Horns to 34.9& field goal percentage (22-63) as well as 8-25 three-pointers (32%).

They also outrebounded North Texas 38-33 and had 7 blocks to 1 for North Texas.

This game was how they have won all season and it all starts with the defense.

Forward Dre Davis led the way with 18 points, four rebounds, four blocks and one steal.

Davis made 7-11 field goals, 2-3 three-pointers and 3-3 free throws.

He was efficient from the field and featured his mid-range game and outside shot.

Point guard Kadary Richmond had a bounce-back game after a sluggish performance against St. Joe’s with an outstanding near “triple-double” of 11 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists.

Richmond made 4-10 field goals, 1-1 three-pointers and 2-2 free throws.

He was back to his old self attacking the glass and getting to the free throw line.

He is at his best when he goes to the hoop and uses his size and strength to get rebounds.

Forward Isaiah Coleman had a fine game off the bench with 14 points, two rebounds, one steal and one block.

Coleman made 6-8 field goals, 1-1 three-pointer and 1-1 free throws.

He showed a lot more confidence and got back to playing like he did earlier in the season.

It’s a great confidence booster for Coleman going into next season and hopefully he will be able to build off this performance.

With this win, the Pirates now look ahead to the NIT quarter-finals on Wednesday, March 28 at Walsh Gym where they will play the winner of Boston College-UNLV.
